In this Journal, I will attempt to strip away my protective veneer to view and communicate honestly what the truth is as I perceive it. My intent is to grow, for without an honest evaluation of the truth, how else can one fully absorb life's more difficult lessons and benefit by them. If I do this in secret, then I am still hiding behind a protective veneer, so it is being published online. If you find this Journal, you are welcome to read it and hopefully grow from it as well.

A Lonely Heart

Last night in a restaurant, as Anne and I were having dinner with our grandchildren Cameron, age 10 and Carina, age 7, I warmly greeted a lovely lady passing by our table.

She stopped and acknowledged my greeting and asked if I knew her. I replied that I didn't but that I saw the kindness in her face and wanted to greet her.

She told us she and her husband had been married for 55 years, until he passed away two years ago.

He had been a locally well known piano player and sometimes the two of them played the piano together.

She was there with her friend and her friend's granddaughter, and she took momentary comfort in our acknowledgement of her.

Looking at her, I could see the hurt and the heartache, expressed in her eyes.

We could not speak in depth, given her circumstances at the restaurant and ours, but I wish I had given her the hug I think she so badly needed.
