In this Journal, I will attempt to strip away my protective veneer to view and communicate honestly what the truth is as I perceive it. My intent is to grow, for without an honest evaluation of the truth, how else can one fully absorb life's more difficult lessons and benefit by them. If I do this in secret, then I am still hiding behind a protective veneer, so it is being published online. If you find this Journal, you are welcome to read it and hopefully grow from it as well.

What Will I Do Today To Make The World A Better Place?

What will I do today to make the world a better place? This is a question I intend to ask myself each day.

Whether the answer is that I will be a good listener for someone who needs to share something vital or I will write a check for a charity, or like yesterday, I will buy a meal for a homeless man and his family, or I will give hugs and reassuring words to someone who needs them, or I will forgive someone who in this life will never know it or I will publish a column that makes readers' lives better, or I will do something else that touches the life of at least one other person in a wonderful way.

Each day there will be something. For in a world of war and poverty, loneliness and fear, heartache and deprivation, it so desperately needs love and compassion and a helping hand and I will do my part to provide it.

For this is the essence of life. It's not about me getting but about others receiving, for God has been extremely generous and protective of me and I have the resources to offer. This would still be true if I lost every material possession short of the clothes and shoes I wear. For aside from my personal growth, this is my purpose in being. In my life love is in abundance and there is plenty to share.

Note: My thinking was influenced by a marvelous piece, "For skating champ Johann Olav Koss, it's just the Right thing to do" by T.J. Simers, published in today's Los Angeles Times. It tells the story of Johann Olav Koss, a former Olympic Games skater who won four gold metals 20 years ago, and has since become a doctor, and a person who helps children in poverty stricken, often war torn nations to have some fun in life. http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-simers-20120527,0,3614601.column
