In this Journal, I will attempt to strip away my protective veneer to view and communicate honestly what the truth is as I perceive it. My intent is to grow, for without an honest evaluation of the truth, how else can one fully absorb life's more difficult lessons and benefit by them. If I do this in secret, then I am still hiding behind a protective veneer, so it is being published online. If you find this Journal, you are welcome to read it and hopefully grow from it as well.

Kyle, Diane & Keoni Visit Africa

From London, shortly before leaving for Africa, Kyle sent a group of us a humorous email update on his trip. While I laughed, as I'm sure everyone else did as well, I sent him the following note of encouragement:

Hi Kyle,

It is wonderful to hear from you and your mother and I hold you and Diane and Keoni in our hearts.

As you visit Africa, please practice "mindfulness," a Zen Buddhist word for deep attentiveness to life's vast number of little miracles.

You will witness a Savannah like no other you will ever see again. And observe flowering plants, seeing each element of their form and color, for these too you will never witness again, except in your mind's eye.

This is a fascinating journey you are on, with the power to uplift your spirit and to teach you valuable lessons.

Love,

Dad
