With Anne's and my son Kevin as one of the coaches, and our daughter in law Melody as an enthusiastic team mother, 7 year old Brody's and 4 year old Gannon's "West Torrance" baseball team wearing white uniforms with red trim opened its season. The team included Brody's friends Tyler, Christian and Nathan, among others.
They played the other "West Torrance" team, which wore red uniforms. No score was kept and each team had its entire lineup up to bat, before the teams changed sides, in which the batting team then took the field.
Brody has developed into a good hitter and hit one ball so far, that if the runners didn't move just one base at a time, he likely would have had a home run. Gannon loves to bat and actually went up to the plate doing a little dance, in which he leaned his upper body forward and hopped side to side and smiled as his little eyes seemed to sparkle with joy.
We, along with most of the crowd, cheered for all of the players, and as they walked up to the plate, some of them waved and smiled at us. Brody and Gannon waved and smiled and as I recall, Gannon may have winked at us one of the times. In any case, his head coach Ron nicknamed him "Gannon the Cannon," which in baseball is what they occasionally call a power hitter. In this game, Gannon got the first hits of his baseball career.
On the field, Brody has become so good a player, that he got some of the runners out, even though no runners leave the field. In one inning, Gannon was the catcher and he is so tiny, it looked like the catcher's equipment was moving on its own. He did manage to tag one of the runners out.
Anne and I had a lot of fun, as we and many in the crowd laughed and cheered. Some of us congratulated the players afterward and offered them words of encouragement, for several of them, including Gannon, were playing their first organized baseball games. And Brody had an outstanding game.
This has the potential to be a wonderful experience all season long for everyone involved, especially for the children and Anne and I look forward to attending the upcoming games.

In this Journal, I will attempt to strip away my protective veneer to view and communicate honestly what the truth is as I perceive it. My intent is to grow, for without an honest evaluation of the truth, how else can one fully absorb life's more difficult lessons and benefit by them. If I do this in secret, then I am still hiding behind a protective veneer, so it is being published online. If you find this Journal, you are welcome to read it and hopefully grow from it as well.
