In this Journal, I will attempt to strip away my protective veneer to view and communicate honestly what the truth is as I perceive it. My intent is to grow, for without an honest evaluation of the truth, how else can one fully absorb life's more difficult lessons and benefit by them. If I do this in secret, then I am still hiding behind a protective veneer, so it is being published online. If you find this Journal, you are welcome to read it and hopefully grow from it as well.

Evictions

As a real estate investor, I dread evictions because it is a terrible thing to throw a family out of their home.

Therefore, I'll do everything possible to avoid that calamity.

People lose their jobs, get sick, marriages end, drug addiction strikes and other bad things happen. Through our son's property management firm, I will attempt to work with them in their time of need.

But on occasion I do an eviction and here is why:

A small percentage of people show callous disregard for the rights and well being of others.

They destroy the property, threaten other tenants or neighbors, throw wild parties requiring police intervention or do other things that make them a menace.

We give them notice, but when there is no significant change in behavior, out they go.

Sometimes children are involved in the eviction, and that hurts most of all.

But my regret is that a child must live with a parent or guardian that is so irresponsible and callous, that an eviction is necessary.

For that child, through no fault of his or her own, this may be but one of a series of evictions.

So it is with all of these issues in mind, I always hope to avoid an eviction, but if I can't convince a tenant to be responsible, I must still be responsible.
