In this Journal, I will attempt to strip away my protective veneer to view and communicate honestly what the truth is as I perceive it. My intent is to grow, for without an honest evaluation of the truth, how else can one fully absorb life's more difficult lessons and benefit by them. If I do this in secret, then I am still hiding behind a protective veneer, so it is being published online. If you find this Journal, you are welcome to read it and hopefully grow from it as well.

2 Year Old Ikaika, Basketball Player & Coach

What you are about to read is incredible and it brings great joy to my heart.

Because of his enthusiasm and energy, Anne's and my cute little 2 year old grandson Ikaika has become an honorary member of his 15 year old brother Keoni's basketball team.

Ikaika stretches with the team and he does player drills such as dribbling one handed around cones and shooting the ball (being so little, his shots go just slightly above his head).

Now Ikaika has even begun to coach.

Last week while a game was being played on the center court, Ikaika set up his own cones on a periphery court so that the younger siblings of the players could practice with his guidance.

Ikaika also began to include some of the players not in the game, and he included his dad, our son Kyle, who played on the USC basketball team for three seasons.

He had Kyle running an exercise he hadn't run since USC coach George Raveling had his team run exercises 25 years ago.

Ikaika doesn't understand that at 2 years of age, he's much too young to play and coach basketball. Therefore, he's doing it!

What follows is Kyle's email description of events, in addition to those he shared with me on the phone:

Dear Dad,
Keoni's travel ball has some practices for high school boys and girls along with college players.  There is a lot going on with many players doing drills and playing games.  Ikaika finds himself totally comfortable calling players by name to either come over to him or to pick up their game with solid directives ("D up" and "rebound" and "shoot").  He will also take people by their finger and bring them over to him where he can put them through drills.  He is quite entertaining and not afraid to boss people around.  All think he is cute and make him feel great to be there.  He likes going "to the gym."
Love,
Kyle
