Our grandchildren Cameron, age 7 and Carina, age 4 stayed overnight with us, and as always, it was our job to spoil them. And spoil them we did. Anne ordered pizza the way they like it and I drove to Malaga Cove Ranch Market to get chocolate milk for them.
We also watched movies of their choice, most notably "Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked" (2011) until bedtime, which came a little later than normal for them. While tucking them in I read a book to them and told them a story. It was then lights out until shortly afterward when Cameron came to join us once again, telling us he couldn't sleep because Carina was snoring.
He watched TV with us for a half hour and then was ready to go to bed.
The next morning, Anne had planned to fix a nice breakfast for them but two days before they stayed with us, she broke her wrist, and it was cast the day before, and she was unable to fix that breakfast. So I asked the kids what they wanted and what they enthusiastically wanted was glazed donuts and in Carina's case, also an apple fritter.
I drove to Mayer's Bakery and returned with the goodies including an extra glazed donut just in case appetites demanded it. The kids finished most of what I bought them, and when our son Clayton arrived to pick them up, he happily finished what they hadn't eaten,
.
As they were leaving, Cameron said something to Clayton that really touched my heart. He said, "There's just one problem with being here: I always have to leave too soon."

In this Journal, I will attempt to strip away my protective veneer to view and communicate honestly what the truth is as I perceive it. My intent is to grow, for without an honest evaluation of the truth, how else can one fully absorb life's more difficult lessons and benefit by them. If I do this in secret, then I am still hiding behind a protective veneer, so it is being published online. If you find this Journal, you are welcome to read it and hopefully grow from it as well.
