A week ago Sunday at Lucille's BBQ restaurant, we had a wonderful family party, that included Uncle Gene 86 and Aunt El, who the next day turned 88. That they were there, coming out about 35 miles from the San Fernando Valley to Torrance in itself made the party special.
But to have our sons Kyle and Kevin (as a doctor, Clayton had to work) and all three of their families present made it delightful for Anne and me. 19 people attended but the one who got the most attention was our not quite 4 month old grandson Ikaika. Everyone gathered around to see him, in many cases it being the first time they had seen him in person.
Ikaika's big brother Keoni 12, has a marvelous way with him, as he plays with him and tickles his cheeks. Speaking of Keoni, I rubbed his shoulders and he pulled away from me. Later when I asked him why, I never got an answer.
Perhaps it was because he and I have never bonded, for over the years, we have seen little of each other except primarily at large gatherings such as this one. Or maybe it is because I have a type A personality and it is too strong for him. It is unfortunate that I can only guess at the reason.
But he is a beautiful child and I am proud that he is my grandson. And what an outstanding party we as a family had, with Uncle Gene saying this was the best of the several big family parties we have held at Lucille's.

I have been a vegetarian for over 12 years and Lucille's offers a very tasty veggie burger.
In this Journal, I will attempt to strip away my protective veneer to view and communicate honestly what the truth is as I perceive it. My intent is to grow, for without an honest evaluation of the truth, how else can one fully absorb life's more difficult lessons and benefit by them. If I do this in secret, then I am still hiding behind a protective veneer, so it is being published online. If you find this Journal, you are welcome to read it and hopefully grow from it as well.
