In this Journal, I will attempt to strip away my protective veneer to view and communicate honestly what the truth is as I perceive it. My intent is to grow, for without an honest evaluation of the truth, how else can one fully absorb life's more difficult lessons and benefit by them. If I do this in secret, then I am still hiding behind a protective veneer, so it is being published online. If you find this Journal, you are welcome to read it and hopefully grow from it as well.

Keoni's 13th Birthday, 6/6/13

On Thursday evening, our family gathered at our son Kyle's and daughter in law Diane's home to celebrate Keoni's birthday, as he is now a teenager.

He is a remarkable young man, well behaved and deeply caring of his baby brother, 5 month old Ikaika, and he is a good student and an outstanding basketball player. I am proud to be his grandfather.

But he and I have never formed a close bond. After hugging and kissing his other grandfather, he just lightly touched me as I attempted to hug him, and he quickly pulled away.

As the adult, the responsibility to build a better relationship lies with me and I will continue to pursue it and with a positive attitude. But I understand how a 13 year old young man would rather play computer games and hang out with his buddies than spend time with me.
