In this Journal, I will attempt to strip away my protective veneer to view and communicate honestly what the truth is as I perceive it. My intent is to grow, for without an honest evaluation of the truth, how else can one fully absorb life's more difficult lessons and benefit by them. If I do this in secret, then I am still hiding behind a protective veneer, so it is being published online. If you find this Journal, you are welcome to read it and hopefully grow from it as well.

Anne's Birthday, Saturday Night, 9/28/13

By Anne's request, she and I hosted our regular Saturday night dinner at Chicago for Ribs. It included Anne's mother Mary as it does each week but our other regular guest Fay Ward, age 99 was unable to attend because of health issues.

I brought a magnificent flower arrangement from the Rolling Hills Flower Mart featuring stunning yellow roses (Anne's favorite) and lilies which were displayed on the table.

Right after we arrived, our son Clayton called and asked if he could bring his family and join the birthday celebration, which I happily said yes to. The restaurant pulled up a lovely table for four next to our booth.

When Clayton arrived with his family, 8 year old Cameron greeted us and jumped onto the booth seating and immediately and enthusiastically joined our conversation.

It was a very happy gathering with the seven of us and Anne, Mary and I were delighted to have them join us.

After dinner Chicago for Ribs did something we had never seen before in the 15 years we have been coming there.

The restaurant food service stopped as the waiters and waitresses came to our table and warmly sang "Happy Birthday" to Anne. They were joined in the singing by diners all around us.

We've never seen them sing "Happy Birthday" before and it was a wonderful thing for them to do. Anne was presented with a hot brownie, topped with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce. She ate some but most of it was devoured by Cameron and his little sister, 5 year old Carina.

Mary also insisted on paying the bill.

The dinner was such a joyous occasion and even now three days later, those yellow roses and lilies look magnificent in our home and emit a heavenly scent. It reminds us again what a wonderful birthday that was for a very special lady.
